More reliable internet connection

phone line all the way from the box outside to the
modem aprox. 50 ft. Or so. Is there a better cable
to use for this ie. Coax / cat 6 or use all four wires
(2 with 2) to improve performance and reliability of
connection? Currently have up to 5 mmb when
low traffic . Between 1 - 3 mmb during peak times.
Am using cat 6 cable for all other wired connections.
Perhaps someone knows the best way to wire for
dependibility and full bandwidth. Thanks, greytape

Besides, anything you were to do between your house and the outside box is going to be limited by the fact that, sooner or later, all DLS connections must travel over a phone line, which is going to be slow. That said, for normal web browsing, and even a little video streaming, a DSL connection is fast enough, even at only 1MB/s. If you want to download movies from iTunes or do online gaming and stuff like that, then you should just get a broadband connection installed.

Basically though, it doesn't make much difference. If you mean you're running the telephone rj-11 cable for 50 ft, you might try switching things around by placing the modem in a box, closer to the phone box source outside, using a short rj-1ll cable to connect the two, then run the 50 ft with CAT5/6 ethernet cable into the building. It's more expensive for the cabling but it shields the signal better.
Using all four wires from the telephone line will cause more problems than it's worth.
But as to your current speed, it's not that bad although most don't experience such a large drop in speeds, even in high traffic, UNLESS there's a lot of noise in your line from elsewhere..

Braided Wire for phone line.
I tried cleaning connections and rewired phone lines .
Now there is no more static on phone line.
internet reaction time is faster to max. On initial testing.
I Still have marvelous flucuation in benchmark test.
Need to test for a week or so to get better assessment
for results. I have lots of cat6 cable so I Will try relocating modem Closer To outside box if need be. Thanks again. Greytape
