Cone attached onto fan.

by anonyy - 11/3/09 1:47 PM

i have an emachines 8210 it an Intel D915GAG Motherboard its a pentium 4 HT (hyper threading) 3 gig processor 512mb ram, the fan has a cone thing on top of it so when it uses the cpu more it speeds up and its VERY noisy it draw air in like a vortex i suppose. is there anyway to quieten this down? when pc is not doing anything or not very much it doesn't make any sound other than the general hum u get on any pc.

the side that comes off has narrow vents, is it sufficient or does it require bigger holes, surprised emachines didn't think more about this, their box design seams to be the same on all of them.

hope someone understands my enquiry.

thanks in advance

Not really

Not really. Your only real recourse is to swap it out with another cooler. The Pentium 4 tended to run pretty hot, especially the later models that were running 3GHz+, so you needed some beefy cooling to keep them from frying themselves.

Fan issues

The cone is there to better direct "airflow" so it does it well. As other posters suggested you could swap it out for a better rated cpu HSF, but try just blowing out the dust bunnies if you haven't already. Those thermo fins do clog and if you haven't cleaned in awhile, that will cause the fan to rev-up sooner which it suppose to do to help the cpu. Added cooling by installing yet another fan(s) will provide a constant desired cooling level and those fan can be the more quiet type. Buy brand name fan(s) or look into a 120mm fan, the larger the better as the slower revs they provide do as much a smaller fans running at same rev or higher.

good luck -----Willy :)
