I have a Dell Dimension 3100 desktop PC which I scan daily with Avast A/V, Superantispyware and Comodo BOClean 4.27 and all scans are clean but today while attempting to post comments on another discussion board everything was so slow. I would type out my comments and have to sit and wait several seconds before my comments would appear on the screen.
Now as I type out this post everything is moving slick as glass, no slow downs apparent. During the slow down period on the other site I heard strange noises coming from my desktop's tower, noises similar to what I hear all the time coming from my old WIN 95 tower which is due to age. Could it be just a problem with the one website or could it be something else causing the slow down?
There's no way to know for sure given then information your provided but if the problem was only on the one site, it could easily be a hiccup by that particular forum on that particular day.. I am a moderator on a couple of different forums and we see such occasionally. The solution is simply to wait out the problem.
On the other hand, if the slow down starts spreading to a broad spectrum of applications, it would certainly help to start a little troubleshooting to determine the culprit.
Hope this helps.

What kind of troubleshooting would you be talking about?
....you're seeing widespread problems... At this point, you haven't mentioned such..
But basically, the link below starts you off in the right direction:

Hope this helps.

The nosie may come from either HDD or power supply.
I would suggest you run the chkdsk /r command to scan your HDD.
From "start" menu, select Run, then type "cmd" and hit enter, from the command prompt, type "chkdsk c: /r" and hit enter and follow the onscreen instruction to proceed to restart your PC.
The scan may take a moment.
I used to have similar problem with IE when browsing certain website, so I install firefox and got the problem solved.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the comments.
You didn't mention the CD/DVD drive so skip this one.
Next you need to find out where that sound is coming from.
Check the fan(s).
Hard drives that are going often have intermittent problems but seldom in the same place. At times they speed up and slow down which can be seen during the PCs operation. Are you having other problems?
The noise of a failing hard drive are usually one of two, an odd whirling sound or a grinding sound.
If you believe it is the hard drive it is important to back up your data, A.S.A.P. then replace the drive. If the hard drive crashes you could lose all your data. Data retrieval services can be expensive.
