Perf improvement to gateway laptop from 2GB to 3GB?

by josephfuentes - 8/15/08 10:47 PM

i have a gateway MX8711 laptop with Win Home Prem Vista Sp1 32bit. It has a dual core processor 2 T2250. It has 2B RAM. If I upgrade it to 3GB will I see a major perf improvement? o hardly a noticeable one?

On a Toshiba laptop with identical OS, I upgraded from 1GB to 2GB and the performance improvement was dramatic. how about from 2 to 3?

Depends on what apps you're running on the laptop.

2 to 3 GBs won't be a dramatic improvement for most apps.

Performance depends on ore than memory.

Performance is a combination of OS, design, applications, user tweaks, and knowledge. You can get the same performance from 1GB as you can from 2GB.

3 GB

I think that if your surfing the web and opening Office then 2GB will be fine but if you plan on using the computer with more memory intensive programs then yes 3GB will be better. Just think of your present and future intended use.

Summary: might make sense if you've got a heavy application mix.

Not an option for you (or me)

The T2250 processor and others in that series can only address 2GB of RAM, so save your money. I'm in the same situation with the T2350 in my Compaq C771.

Thanks - that hit the nail right on the head

It turns out after talking to gateway I was told my laptop (MX8711) all it could take was 2GB RAM max. At first I thought it was issue with # of slots but looks like it was an intel issue all along.

thanks to those who contributed.

Depends on the shared memory

by GENE8 - 9/6/08 9:59 AM In reply to: Perf improvement to gateway laptop from 2GB to 3GB? by josephfuentes

How much improvement you'll have when you go from 2GB to 3GB will depend on how much shared memory your video takes away from your RAM. If your video card takes a lot of shared memory away, then there will not be much improvement if you go to 3GB. If possible, you should try to upgrade to as much RAM as your laptop can handle if your video is stealing too much shared memory and you can't reduce it in any way manually.

For Vista, more RAM is generally better.

If it was XP I'd say don't bother. But because it's Vista I'd give it as much RAM as possible, I won't recommend a Vista PC with less then 2 Gig, but Vista for some reason really wants 4 Gig of RAM. Other things that could bog it down are background processes, on XP I typically 40 to 45 processes. Programs you have opened at the time could also slow it down (If you have Norton I would recommend you look at another anti-virus program). Other then that I could recommend that you turn off a lot of the pretty looking features like Aero if you want better performance.
