Superdrive freezing DVDs, not reading menus, in Macbook Pro

by alluraofarus - 9/2/08 11:17 AM

I've rented 3 dvds from Netflix and tried to watch them in my MBP, thinking there was a problem with the dvd, but they all have the same issues. The video will suddenly freeze but the audio keeps going. The only way I can get out of this frozen screen is to use the remote that came w/ my MBP to eject the dvd. Also, the dvd menus are no longer functional. I can only press play but I can not navigate the menus with my remote, or with the mouse (the mouse cursor disappears now when I put a dvd in the drive). When I press play, it will play for about 10 minutes and then freeze. It seems like each time it's freezing about halfway into a track/chapter. I can eject the dvd, go back to the beginning, skip forward to the next track, and rewind to just after the point where it freezes, but I have to do this with EVERY track/chapter. And I have to eject it every time or it won't play at all.

This is a dvd-burning Superdrive. Has anyone else had similar problems? I have no idea how I would go about replacing the drive if it's broken, as it's built into the laptop with no way that I can see to access it. The laptop is just barely out of warranty.

Thanks for any help. I don't know what I would do without CNET forums. Here's another Mac oddity: when I log into Apple's own forums, the option to post a new thread in any of their forums is gone. It's not at the top of the page where it used to be, nor is it anywhere on any of the pages that I've visited. I'm talking about when I go to the main discussions page, and then click on the link for Macbook Pro or iPod, there's nothing there for posting. If I click on a specific thread in those forums, I can *reply*, but this is not a topic I could find. I've only posted maybe 3 threads in the past year, and have answered a few - is there some sort of limit? Or can you only post new topics if you're under warranty?? It's really aggravating.

Try Repairing Permissions,

on your MBP.

If this does not restore functionality to your DVD player, and to everything else you have going wrong, I would suggest doing an Archive and Install of the OS to replace the, apparently corrupt, system with another.

The Archive and Install option is the ONLY way to put a new system on there without destroying all your data.

MacBook Pro

I don't know about you, but when I visit the Apple boards, I have to click on a sub-category in a category in order to post a topic. For example, if you are trying to post in the MacBook Pro section, you would click on the MacBook Pro link. From there, since you have DVD problems, click on the sub-section that mentions "The optical drive and your MacBook Pro" or something. Then you can post a question. Their forums won't let you post without choosing a more specific area in each product category. Helps everyone navigate and manage threads I bet.

If you rented 3 different DVDs, most likely the problem is not with the discs. Did you try any other movies? Did you play the rented movies on another DVD player? Most likely the discs you have work, and that something on the MacBook is causing the problem. Try playing a DVD again, but this time, reduce the movie's window size (don't go into full-screen). Now, go to your Applications folder, find Utilities, and under Utilities, open the Console program. Watch and see if any error reports or oddities appear while the discs start to skip or quit playing. This may help you determine the source of the problem: the system, or the SuperDrive. If repairing permissions or reinstalling the system does not work either, you may have to take it into the shop. Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

problem solved - I think...

I figured out that the table surface my MBP was resting on was not perfectly level. When I fixed this by wedging some folded papers under one of the table legs, I put one of the glitchy dvds in the drive again (hadn't mailed them back to Netflix yet) and...no glitches so far! I was also able to access the menu with both the mouse and the page-down button, as well as the remote. Now I can watch "Marjoe" again w/o skipping tracks! <-- The aforementioned documentary is highly recommended...

So, if anyone else out there has thrift store furniture left over from their very first apartment, and is having video problems w/ their MBP, try a different table/desk....

Iffy sounding fix

Level is not usually a requirement for playing DVD's in a Macbook Pro so your fix may only be hiding the real problem, whatever that may be.

Optical drives typically hold the disk before spinning it up to speed and as the disk is held, it is not at important that the player be level.
The iMac optical drive is essentially the same as a laptop drive and it is mounted vertically. Not exactly vertical, given that the screen on an iMac is adjustable through about 8 inches of arc, yet still plays disks correctly.

Glad you got to see Marjoe, uninterrupted, but bear in mind that you may not be out of the woods yet

Hmm...

I find it hard to believe that your table caused this problem, but anything is possible. Of course I can watch DVDs in my MacBook Pro on an uneven bed with no trouble. ;) I have never had a problem watching regular movies. But hey, whatever works. Perhaps you just had a random fluctuation. Quite possible I'm sure. Well good luck with the MacBook. Let us know if you have a problem with this again.
