Desktop Replacement Laptop

by RWirth91 - 10/3/09 2:02 PM

I'm new to powerful laptops, and with the upcoming release of Bioware's Dragon Age: Origins, I'm looking for a powerful laptop for out of the house work on level design and 3d modeling. I've been stuck relying on my university's 3d modeling lab for high-performance stuff.

Anyway, I would really appreciate help on getting a desktop replacement laptop of high quality. I've got $1400-$1500 I'm willing to put into it, but I don't know the ins and outs of laptop building. Is there a solid ordering website? Should I put it together myself? You know the whole bit.

Thanks for any help you can offer,
-Richard W.

About that CAD software.

Be sure they are ready for the Windows 7 move, 64 bit and all that.

As you didn't tell what country all I can say is that HP Quad Core looks about right.

Region/Specs update

I'm in the U.S., sorry. As for ideal power, the "new age" game that I'll be primarily working on in level design has these for its specs:
Recommended Specifications
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz Processor or equivalent
AMD Phenom II X3 Triple-Core 2.8 GHz or greater
RAM: 4 GB (Vista) or 2 GB (XP)
Video: ATI 3850 512 MB or greater
NVIDIA 8800GTS 512 MB or greater
DVD ROM (Physical copy)
20 GB HD space

Like I said I've got $1500 or so to put down on this laptop. I looked at Dell's build your laptop thing, but it comes with so much trash software that the price seems absurd.

What trash?

The last dozen machines from HP, Acer, Toshiba, Dell, Apple and I can't recall the other name didn't come with any trash unless you call the Office 2007 trial that everyone gets trash.

Do you really think that the 10 minutes I spent uninstalling a couple items is reason to dismiss a machine? (I really want to know.)

Here's that HP. http://www.amazon.com/Pavilion-DV7-2180US-17-3-Inch-Entertainment-Laptop/dp/B002BH4Q82/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

It barely misses your specifications.
