Building a gaming laptop

by razor_90 - 10/17/09 8:17 AM

I know a local computer guy who is trustworthy and knowledgeable. He claims to be able to build a laptop that equals the performance of an Alienware M17x. (He runs his own computer store).

The problem is this: He doesn't seem to know much about Nvidia mobile graphics chips such as the GeForce 260M or 130M. He keeps talking about the 9000 series graphics by Nvidia.

My question is this: Can you put an actual graphics card into a laptop if your building one? Also, is there a 9000 series graphics chip?

Please help clarify.

Today? No.

No laptop made today comes with the open space and PCIe slot to hold a desktop card. This area is well discussed but let's start with no.

You can stick a toaster in a "laptop" if you want...

I mean, if this guy is custom-building machines, heck yeah he could theoretically throw an actual desktop card in your "notebook," but would you want to? I mean, I can throw a flux capacitor in too, but that kind of defeats the case of wanting a small form-factor machine for conceivably mobile gaming.

The 9000s were semi-announced a couple times, but no firm announcements have been made about release date, as far as I can tell.

Nvidia does a good job of informing people about their new lines, so if you're looking for good info, then you'll find it on their sites.
