Just bought the laptop. Its running an AMD 64 processor at 1.6 Ghz. I have a AMD Turion 64x2 at 1.8 Ghz that I want to install. I know it will fit the computer but is it safe to make the switch. Should make Vista run faster and help my video analysis software run smoother. However, will the computer freak when I change it, will it overheat? Just curious? Looking for any advice
I was doing a little research and came up with zip on what motherboard this laptop runs. So... I did what any other overclocking nut would do... Piece it together and let it fly. I am happy to annonce that I am running a 5050e AMD in my Aspire 5515.
2.6 x 2 at 64 bits.
The processor runs @ 45 watts and I have had it maxxed for over an hour (100% usage) on the stock cooler with no issues. The socket is a am2 socket with all the trimmings.. I updated the ram to 4gig (system max) and I am runnign the beta of windows 7.
Its not high end... but its isn't your typical 350 dollar lappy either....
I have seen the "can I update the processor" question on many forums and question sites. No answers.... So after this success I hit the top result from google (which was this forum)... registered and posted...
A DUAL CORE 45 WATT SOCKET AM2 WILL WORK!!!!!!!
Wow, this is great news. I'm using my Aspire 5515 as I type this, only had it a couple weeks but I'm very satisfied with it. Bought mine at Fry's, but it's the 2gb memory version. I'm glad you were able to upgrade the processor. You went from a 1.6ghz to 1.8. Did it really make that big of a difference? I'm going to upgrade the memory and video memory, too, going to max it out to what it's capable of eventually but did it make much of a difference with the new processor? And how much is that processor you put in it?
yep, same here. upgraded to 4 gigs ram and a 5050e amd 2.6 x2 64bit. great cheap laptop. and with Linux I don't even see much of a battery drain when its scaled during normal usage.
Is it difficult to change the processor in the notebook? The most I have ever done is add RAM. I would like to upgrade the processor because it does seem to be a little sluggish, but otherwise, I really enjoy the machine.
I upgraded the ram to the full 4 gigs worked fine
Then last night I installed a AMD 4450B X2 Processor (2.3 Ghz) 45W Socket AM2
of course using cpu thermal paste a small amount evenly spread.
As far as the cpu install not to trickery remove the large cover on the back and then the four screws that hold in the cpu heat trap the the two screws that hold in the fan (unplug the fan) at this point the cpu is exposed and you can see the the release bar that holds in the cpu, it’s a little trickery to lift it, there’s a cross bar (part of the case) that you must get past in order to lift the cpu bar, remove all the screws that hold it down to get the most play in it you can then lift the cross bar and hold it while lifting the cpu release bar from under the cross bar, at this point the release bar is mostly lifted however to get it the rest of the way you will have to carefully cut a notch out, you will see where it needs cut with the bar lifted, so the cpu can be removed, (I used a razor knife) pull out the cpu carefully clean off the heat sync (alcohol will work) careful not to spill, then apply the thermal past, spread it install It; and put it all back together.
IT IS OF COURSE VERY IMPORTANT TO REMOVE ALL POWER FROM THE LAPTOP FIRST (BATTERY & CHARGER)
Have fun, I’m typing this on mine now.
This is just for informational purposes I will assume no responsible for you actions.
I have just swapped out the oe cpu for an dual core 5050e 45w amd went smoothly! Now, I'm 2.6ghz amd 4gigs of ram and lovijg it!
I would also like to upgrade my cpu, and have read the recommnedations on using the amd x2 5050e processor, but it says it is for a desktop, could some one point mt to the correct one, via link please.
thanks
If others have used the 5050e processor in their Acer 5515, why are you hesitant?
I'm not hesitant, I would like to know this, because the one I found said it's for a desktop application, and i do not want to purchase the wrong one, and just wanted to make sure i was looking at the correct one...before i purchase
I just upgraded to the AMD Athlon X2 5050e it takes about 15-30 mins
I'm running at 24c-50c, way lower than the singe core, twice as fast.
It requires you to remove the power source, take the 4 screws off on the right rear pannel.
Remove the 2 fan screws, and the disconnect the fan from the power.
Remove the 4 Silver screws on the Processor heat sync and remove the heat sync.
This is the tricky part of removing the Processor, there's a silver bar that needs to be moved up to release the processor, the tricky part is that there is a support beam above the bar, You can actually move that bar towards the right and around the beam. Here's the hint, the beam can bend!
Once you remove the processor, replace it with the 5050e by matching the triangles on the processor and the hub. If the silver bar aka fastener is down, the processor will not be secure. You must raise the bar to insert the processor then lower it to secure it.
Make sure to put some Silver Thermal compound on top of the processor so that you don't ruin your new new computer that you just upgraded.
Replace all the screws and replace the battery and boot up! You just made your computer 2X Faster and worth a lot more money! For $60
Thanks for the tutorial, just for hindsight, this is the correct one to be looking for ...correct...

We took your advice and bought ourselfs this CPU...
It wasn't that hard to install, but when we booted it up it started fine but we put a temp gage at the end of the vent, and it was comeing out at about 104 F compared to the other orginal processor @ 90-97 F after runnning for about 2 hours. keep in mind that we ran the new one for only a matter of minutes it got A LOT hotter.... is this normal do you think? How hot can I let it get?
Please reply....
The CPU being a 5050e from Newegg....
