Need anti-virus software for Window-7(RC)

by kdasgupta - 6/11/09 11:14 AM

Microsoft Live One care that I was using before upgrading to Window-7 (RC) does not work anymore. Defender still works. Can you suggest any suitable anti-virus/internet security software for Window-7(RC) environment? Thanks.

i think OneCare is being phased out

by ramarc - 6/11/09 4:43 PM In reply to: List of Win 7 Security Providers by RonS [WINDOWS-TEAM] Windows Outreach Team

it's conspicuously omitted from the win7 list and i don't think it's being actively marketed.

i got it for $25 (supporting 3 PCs) and when that subscription expired i couldn't find it anywhere except from microsoft. bestbuy doesn't even carry it anymore. i guess the other av vendors complained too much about ms stepping on their toes.

MS will offer free AV for win7 (and other windows flavors)

by ramarc - 6/11/09 4:58 PM In reply to: i think OneCare is being phased out by ramarc

OneCare is indeed discontinued. but it will be replaced by a freebie! the free product will be a barebones AV program without the backup and "circle" features of OneCare.

It was terminated...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 6/11/09 5:04 PM In reply to: i think OneCare is being phased out by ramarc

The announcement was made last year and OneCare will be officially terminated at the end of this month. Nevertheless, Microsoft will soon be announcing an antivirus application, codenamed Morro, that, like Windows Defender, will be available to authentic Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users free of charge.

Exactly

Be sure to download and try it out. It should work mostly like OneCare, so it shouldn't be a huge paradigm shift for those who used the other security suite.

good free virus and spyware programs..

by ctadams10462 - 6/20/09 2:29 AM In reply to: Need anti-virus software for Window-7(RC) by kdasgupta

I am going to recomend AVG Free 8.5 antivirus/spyware. just google Avg free and it will be like the first on the list. avgfree.com or similiar. next go get Superantispyware.com free edition. works awsome. has saved my pc and families many a time. Also new to me is Malwarebytes.com free program. this found trojans spyware that was in my pc for a long time even after the others were clear.

Hope this helps.

Ps. this combo of stuff has helped me and my families pcs when all there paid for services didnt see anything coming such as Trend Micro, Mcafee and Norton! never again.

Another for AVAST

by Zouch - 6/20/09 6:25 AM In reply to: Need anti-virus software for Window-7(RC) by kdasgupta

I'm using Avast free and it works just fine. Morro, Onecare replacement is available on beta in some countries (USA, Japan and later China and Brazil, from memory) next week. Downloads are limited so if you decide to try it, be quick.
