Dell Studio XPS 435MT

by mda1957 - 5/26/09 6:00 AM

Just purchased a Dell Studio XPS 435MT, Intel Core i7-920 2.65ghz processor, 6GB DDR3 SDRAM 1067mhz, ATI RADEON HD4670 512MB,,640GB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive 7200 rpm, 19-1 W/Dell bluetooth package, Mindows Vista SP1 Home Premium 64 bit, Integrated 10/1000 ethernet, 16X DVD+/-RW, integrated 7.1 audio, Dell 1505 WLAN, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Unit works fine when you first power it up, but if you leave it running for approx. 20/30 minutes it locks up. The screen saver freezes in place and nothing works. Only way to get it active again is to manually power down and restart. Haven't been on it for hours at a time, but it seems to work ok if you are actively using it. I've done the self test program provided by Dell, passed. Looked at all settings without finding anything wrong. Except the ribbon screen saver stops working but when the report is sent in Windows does not have a fix for it now. I know a little but not much about computers. Can anyone think of or know of anything helpful before I start with the support people at Dell?

contact Dell

I would check the Power Settings, "change advanced settings" to see what you might change. Turn off all screensavers to see if that is causing the problem. Screensavers are totally unnecessary nowadays and can cause problems. But since this is new, you must contact Dell asap. This might be something that needs to be reported. Do not let Dell try to make you reinstall Windows (the standard answer when support can't or won't figure out what's wrong) or replace hardware yourself.

Same problem

by m1ke0 - 8/25/09 1:29 PM In reply to: Dell Studio XPS 435MT by mda1957

I've had the same problem for months. I'm sure it's a h/w thing.

About 5-10min after power-up the mouse starts freezing. It looks like the whole USB bus is being reset. The power lights on various USB devices all go off for a sec. Freezes get more frequent until the machine freezes completely about 5 min later. After I power it off and reboot, it runs fine for hours and hours.

It seems something has to warm up and reboot before it's stable. When I want to use it, I just turn it on, wait for it to crash, reboot, and then do whatever I need to.

This happened with just Vista alone. At first I attributed it to Vista. Then I set up the machine to dual boot WinXP. Exactly the same thing happens under XP - same timing, but completely different OS, drivers, etc.

I'm going to take it in for warranty servicing this week.

Freezing problem

I had very same problem. Checked/tested everything but nothing worked out. I called Dell service, they'd changed my motherboard and CPU now my system works perfectly. This is a hardware issue not software and/or configuration. Before I called Dell, I completed these tests:

1- DELL diagnostics tests (all passed)
2- RAM tests -by 3rd party tools- (all passed)
3- CPU stress tests (all passed)
4- CPU heat tests (all passed)
5- GPU stress tests (all passed)
6- HDD tests (all passed)
7- Enabling/disabling some system properties from BIOS randomly (nothing changed)

Dell service tried these in my place:

1- Cross checked RAM modules (nothing changed)
2- Replaced ATI HD4850 card (nothing changed)
3- Replaced PSU (nothing changed)
4- Replaced Motherboard and CPU - PROBLEM FIXED

Call Dell! They offer the best after-sale service I've ever seen. Thanx guys :)

how long?

That's great! (that they fixed it, not that you had the problem). How long were you without your PC? Did you buy it through Dell, or a retailer? I bought my through a retailer, so the process may be longer than if I got it directly from Dell.
