Burning a large file to multiple CDs

by gomezy3k - 6/15/09 10:16 AM

I have a ton of scifi and fantasy and jokes and other pictures in several rather huge files (some are on an external Hard drive) and want to burn them onto CD-Roms to clean out my computer. I tried to do a burn and get an error code that says the file is too large for one CD-ROm. I really do not want to go through and try and break down all the pix into small files. It seems like back an operating system or two, Windows allowed you to burn a file and when one CD-ROM was full, it would ask for another, and so on. Vista doesn't seem to want to do this..or at least I do not know how to do it.

Any suggestions would be helpful. I have a DVD-RW that I use to burn.

Not supported by the operating system, but...

Something along the lines of Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 (free version) would do the trick, with its backup feature spanning multiple discs and somewhat automating the process for you. GFI Backup 2009, also free, is primarily a backup application rather than a burning application, but also fulfills your needs as it can burn its backups to multiple discs.

Hope this helps,
John

Thanks ... Yeah that is what I need... Hate having all these pix and files taking up room when I only need them every so often... Thanks again... LOL I know just enough about computers to really screw them up...

Why Not Use DVD Discs?

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 6/15/09 5:04 PM In reply to: Burning a large file to multiple CDs by gomezy3k

You mentioned CD discs which hold much less data, about 700 MB.. DVD discs allow for more than 4 GB on single layer and over 8 GB on dual-layer discs..

Hope this helps.

Agree and make duplicates

DVD-ROM would certainly help if you have a DVD burner but don't forget that home burn CDs and DVDs are not as robust as commercially burned ones, so make a second copy to be sure and make sure they are stored cool, dry and away from the light.

Revovering data from backup

by paul_saute - 6/20/09 2:13 PM In reply to: Burning a large file to multiple CDs by gomezy3k

Well, I agree that using multiple disk backup software is easier. But, when you want to restore the information (for example, retrieve a specific file) you'll most likely have to restore ALL of the disks that were created in that session.

I prefer to organize the data into sub-folders and copy one disk at a time.
