Team, I need to buy a new desktop (AMD Quad Core) but I do not want to run Vista. I would like to install the XP OS. I called the vendors ( HP, Dell, etc.)to verify if I will encounter any problem when I downgrade. All of the vendors indicated that the warrantee will be void if I do so and can't garrantee if the driver will work properly.
Do you think those vendors are trying to scare me? or the Vista drivers will work with XP?
For all PCs, the vendors has only one set of drivers (Vista).
Any suggestions?
First and foremost, the warranty would not be voided by installing Windows XP or any other operating system. What they should have stated was that they will not provide support for the operating system you choose to install, so if you encounter operating system-related problems you are on your own. Hardware problems would still be fully covered, though.
As to drivers, those designed for Windows Vista will not work for Windows XP. However, none of the components are actually made by Dell, HP, etc. The CPU is from AMD, the motherboard from Asus, the networking and sound chips from Realtek, etc. Thus, you can usually track down Windows XP drivers for each individual component yourself. There just aren't guarantees, so you may find some functionality to be flaky while using generic drivers.

Dont worry What Dell or anyone Else tells You
Your Computer will work fine on XP it will even be alot faster too
As for the Drivers You can always download XP Drivers from loads of places, Or get a program called "Driver Genius" It will down load the drivers for You.
I Know I am right as I did the same with my laptop
Good luck

Hi,
I purchased a new Dell Inspiron XPS M1530 laptop last March, and there was not a chance to purchase XP on any model then. Later they started allowing some to come with XP. Unfortunately, the VPN at work did not allow Vista yet, so I really was not able to use the computer for work. I VPN'd from home 4 days/week. About a month later, they upgraded the VPN. I kept losing my documents on the multiple "Documents" folders, so I was happy to go back to XP.
The laptop has another problem, though, and that is the keyboard.
Dell said they were not making the patch for the keyboard problem (jumped to a different line while typing -- constantly, just as my Toshiba did), so I have been stuck with that problem. I just cannot use the $2500 computer I purchased!
I successfully moved to XP, did the "suggested" keeping the Vista restore module, but I either did something wrong or who knows. Now, just 6 mnonths after changing to XP, my D (restore) drive somehow has gotten full, and I get a message constantly. I have removed all data last night, and I will reinstall Vista today -- without the restore capabilities, as for some reason, with multiple external hard drives around, I did not back that part up--that I remember, anyway. Well, at least Dell does give the actual disks for reinstalling, not like the HP my friend just bought and then returned.
On your desktop, you might not have a problem, but if you go to XP on a Vista laptop, beware!
When I bought a new computer in 2008 it came with Vista and I downgraded to XP. I ran XP for about a year but kept having problems with a MP3 player not working with XP. I finally just reinstalled vista on my machine. I turned off the stupid UAC and put Vista into classic mode. I actually like it better than XP. Vista seems a lot more robust and user friendly than XP ever was. Just my 2 cents.
