Ok when I try to boot up yesterday it came up to the dell screen and a white bar, the bar was moving slowly then normal. then it goes to a white blinking line and then beeps. what it usually does is load up then the white blinking line comes up and goes away within 1 sec. i did a system restore back to the last window update and it seems fine. i had this issue a month ago when i loaded a game that might not have been compatiable with win vista. i also have a usb optical mouse that i've had since 8/04. any ideas what may be causing this?
Among the prime candidates are:
1.) A faulty Windows update.
2.) A faulty startup application.
3.) A faulty device driver.
-> For the first, a System Restore followed by a fresh update is the best cure.
-> For the second, you can check the Startup tab of MSConfig (press WINKEY + R and type msconfig) and disable any application that is not absolutely necessary. The process of trial and error will enable you to narrow down which one is causing the problem.
-> For the third, identifying any recent hardware changes or driver updates and reversing the change is the key.
Also, you can check the Event Viewer (available as an administrative option in the Control Panel) to see if it offers any clues as to the cause, or at least a relevant error message.
Hope this helps,
John
well i talked to dell and the tech said they see this issue with windows update. so i did the system restore and went back to before the update and now i won't let it update until i say its ok. i have msconfig to only start the needed apps like virus scan, the mouse pad, power options and the network program. the device issue the only thing i can think of is the old usb mouse i use-so now i'm not plugging it in until it's booted up. the dell tech said he is pretty sure that windows update is the cause as it's what they've seen in the past that causes this.
I had a very similar problem after the last update, I persevered and after the 4th re-start all seemed to be well with a "configuring updates" screen then a normal Vist start-up.
Start-up times seem to be a little bit longer since then (but not by much) so I guess something in the last update caused some problems which it took Windows a few attempts to sort out.
There's nothing useful in my log files to explain it and all seems well now
