Vista System Restore

by samrivers9 - 9/3/08 7:38 PM

I have had my HP laptop for a few weeks and I started noticing my hard drive space was slowly getting smaller, after some research I realized this was probably due to Vistas system restore points.

My questions is do I need to keep my system restore functioning even if my HP laptop comes with a Recovery drive (which is using 9 of the 11 gigs)? Also my system restore has a max capacity of 30 gigs, is this much memory necessary? If not how do I reduce the size?

My HD has 250 gigs, and i have about 160 free...space isnt an issure but I don't want to use up 30 gigs on something I dont need. Please let me know what you guys think

*On a side not I am a beginner with computers so please keep explanations simple :)

Sam, I would recommend...

keeping System Restore active at all times. It can get you out of a jam without the needed to recover your system to factory specs.

As to the size, if you are not in need of the hard drive space it may be best to leave as is for the moment. If you elect, the space reserved can be changed. Best I recall mine is set at 20gigs which may be way too much. The following is a Google search link where you will find plenty of information.

Hope this helps and good luck.

SystemRestore disc usage at 15GB, restore points staying low

by jedeco - 1/18/09 12:43 PM In reply to: Vista System Restore by samrivers9

Sorry, i didn't know how to create a new post on this topic so I replied to your post Sam. Hope you don't mind.

I have 3 discs set for system restore. Each disc holds it's own shadowstorage space and the C: drive max is set at around 25GB.
However, even when only 3 restore points showed up, the disc usage on C: was around 8GB. That can't be right. I changed Task Scheduler to run only at night (disabled the restore point at login +30 minutes) and i changed it to wake the machine to run, which works great as i only put the machine in low power with the on/off looking button under start beside "lock machine".
It runs successfully every single night but sometimes I'll start system restore process to see how many are there and certain times a night that ran fine according to task scheduler history will not show up under the system restore process? What's going on? It won't go above 12 restore points, yet the disc usage keeps growing and growing. It's at 15GB used right now.
And sometimes if there is a system restore point created when i run windows update, that one will show up but the one that runs the next day in the a.m. never shows up.
Also, is there any way to see restore points available w/o starting the process and clicking next to see? That's crazy. i should be able to monitor my restore point w/o coming one accidently bump of the return key away from it kicking off.
Sorry so wordy but in short, my disc usage for restore points is growing large but i only have a handful of points that won't grown in number, even though the used disc space keeps growing. Where are they?
Is there an index that needs rebuilt maybe?
