I got SP1 in my windows update. It tryed to install [took longer than it should, and acted wierd during the install]. Finally I ended up having to run the install in safe mode. Once the installion completed, it said it failed. My PC got messed up from that point on. I was getting an error on boot saying I'm missing a required DLL file. I managed to fix that and get back to windows. I backed up everything with oppurtunity. My PC is now back to normal.
BUT. I'm now getting a prompt from windows update to install SP1 again. Should I try again? I really dont wanna risk having to reformat, but I was wondering if anyone can help me? Thanks in advance.
SP1 does have some known compatibility issues (link) to watch out for, and the presence of corruption or a malware infection can cause installation problems, so glitches aren't unheard of.
To help the process go a little smoother:
1.) Create a System Restore point as a precautionary measure. (Reverting will remove SP1 if necessary.)
2.) Close any unnecessary software before starting the installation.
3.) Install SP1 from the downloadable version instead of through Windows Update. It's much larger and Microsoft recommends individuals use Windows Update instead, but it's proven to be less problematic.
Hope this helps,
John
A problem was identified, in where Microsoft updates, were not applied properly or at all as a result of, shall we say un-timely installed (automated) NetFramework updates.
You may have missed out on 'all sorts' of up-dates due to this problem?
Their solution is to use the 'Control-Panel' to remove NetFrameworks updates, to Verison 2. Then, use the automatic-update feature to 're-install' the Frameworks packages and ALL the updates, your missing!
I was missing 97 (number of) updates, until I realized the problem existed.
Search the Microsoft Knowledge data-base for more details on the problem. You'll be up to date and in fine shape in no time after doing so.
If you accidentally installed frameworks 3 before 2, this is what caused the problem. It's a pretty easy fix. Though you must go through all the extra steps.
So let me get this straight...
1)Uninstall .netframeworks? I'm only see in my add/remove microsoft.net framework 1.1 and a 1.1 hotfix
2)run windows update to reinstall these?
3)install SP1??
An excellent hint: download the whole Service Pack 1 and install it afterwards. There are other actions: run firs Windows Update and update everything but SP1; clean all unnecessary files (*.tmp, etc.) you may want to run System Tools to do it. Open CMD with administrator status and digit chkdsk /f; next time the computer boots it will check your disk. Finally run defrag. Only after going through all these steps install SP1; FYI most (if not all) of these information shows up on the Microsoft Site. I didn’t care to read it and as a severe punishment I had to format my HD.
Before you install any service pack it is alway very important to make sure your computer is clean and running smoothly, you should always:
1. Run a full manual Virus Scan.
2. Run a least 2 Antispyware Scans (SpyBot and AdAware would do it).
3. Run Windows Disk Cleanup or other temp file cleaner such as ATF or CCleaner.
4. Scan the drive for errors by Running Chkdsk.
5. Run Defrag.
6. And personally, I would uninstall my security software, especially if you have Norton or McAfee and then reinstall after the Service pack is installed.
7. Download the full service pack instead of using updates.
You can download the full Vista Service Pack 1 from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b0c7136d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674&DisplayLang=en
From what I hear, the Vista SP1 installation hangs or screws up if it has to install the .NET Framework 3.5 during the installation. If you download the 3.5 installation from microsoft and install it ahead of time so SP1 doesn't have to worry about it.
And yes, as another user said, use the larger install from the microsoft downloads page. Sure its about 400MB, but I downloaded it on a 256kbits connection (39 KB per second) took me all night but like I said, it is very worth it. But don't forget to install the .NET Framework 3.5 first!
In my control panel it says I only have .net 1.0 and a hotfix 1.1.
Do I need to install 2.0 and or uninstall 1.0 at all? Or can I just download 3.5 and go with that??
yeah if someone could clear this up for us it would be great. I wanna get SP1 installed, thanks.
-> It is recommended that your system be up-to-date prior to SP1's installation, but having .NET Framework 3.5 installed is not mandatory.
-> You do not need to explicitly install or uninstall previous version of the .NET Framework prior to installing version 3.5.

I tried doing everyone's suggestions...it still didnt work.
1. I did full virus scan
2. i did full spyware scan
3. .net framework 3.5 in installed
4. no antivirus software was installed
5. i cleared my temp files
6. i used the 430mb+ installer, NOT W.U.
After the installation completed it said SP1 installation failed. Now reverting settings. When I can finally boot into windows...I get the error code:800f0826. I looked this up on microsoft.com ------>
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/2d96561c-0a7a-492a-b48f-8317cf4f1fde1033.mspx
I tried looking for one that failed but I couldnt find any...help! [this part pertaining to the solution microsoft gives in the above link]
You might want to scan the hard drive for errors and then try the upgrade again. Click on Computer > Right click on C drive > select Properties > Select Tools > Select Check Now in the error checking section > Check the first box (AUtomatically Fix). Next you will be asked to schedule this the next time the computer starts, so go ahead and select that and reboot your computer.
ok I do that...and then press restart. but it just reboots normally, i never see it go to a chkdsk screen? or isnt it supposed to?
After installing service pack 1, I am unable to execute a program using Windows explorer. When I click on the executable, Windows Explorer shuts down. Is any one else having the same problem?
