Is it time?

by scoop88 - 3/16/08 10:20 PM

So I've heard that service pack 1 for vista is out to the public in the next few days and that some people already have it (correct me if I'm wrong). Anyways, I am running XP still and was hesitant to upgrade because of so many issues I have heard of. But now that SP 1 is being released, is it time to upgrade??

Not yet!

Wait to see if users have problems with the Service Pack. Have seen some negative comments that it may adversely effect some. Just a word of caution.

Not sure if it will ever be the time

by rgfitz - 3/17/08 9:37 AM In reply to: Is it time? by scoop88

I have been running Vista(SP1) and XP(SP3) independently on two separate disk drives on my Dell E510 Desktop computer for a month or so.

I would strongly advise anyone considering a switch to try the two operating system side-by-side before switching.

A few of my old programs just wont run on Vista and Earthlink, my ISP, doesn't run well.

The only reason Vista Home Premium is still on my computer is that it only cost me $35.

So far, I see no reason to switch to Vista.

Well maybe I will wait a bit then. I can get Vista Ultimate through my school for really cheap as well so that the only reason I am really considering this. I'm running a laptop now with 1 GB RAM as of last week when my other one quit on me, so maybe I'll work towards getting that other gig back before I upgrade (or maybe I should just say switch over by what I've heard).

If anyone else has some advice I would love to hear it, I am still undecided.

Is It Time

I have had my Vista since Oct5/07 and jumped from my W98.I have been completely satisfied with it.I think where some of the bad raps it has received is from users with insuffient RAM and or hardward compatability. As far as an OS it is very stable, and I could recommend it on it's "search feature" alone.I have 2GB RAM (strongly recommend that) and a 4000+ dual core AMD.I have not had one BSOD,and being on high-speed DSL it is supper fast.

Interesting you should raise that question.I have been advised it has been released to public for manual D/L,but I have not been able to locate it on the Microsoft web site,so I am hoping someone will reply here and give me directions.

My understanding is same as yours...

But I have not seen it either. Rumors are it was to be released to public on March 15th and saw yesterday it was coming today. Don't know and your guess is good as any.

I thought maybe you had an early release and was curious how the install went. I have see where some early testers were having some issues... maybe that is delaying the final release.

I followed this link to mfst. D/L center, and did you notice it pointed out if you were upgrading only one pc that you should go to the "windows update site".Further stating it would be a much smaller service pack in size. After it completed it's scan I got the message "no updates available".I plan to just keep returning to the "updated site".

I saw that...

Went there and only option given me was to install it... I have a problem with that and wanted to save to disk. Purpose being I do not wish to install just now.

Vista SP1 on a disk

by rgfitz - 3/18/08 8:52 PM In reply to: I saw that... by glenn30

I have:

Windows6.0-KB936330-wave0-X86.exe

on a disk and it is 436MB so it must not be difficult to download and save...I just can't remember where I got it. I am sure it was from Microsoft.

When I want to download a big file I use my laptop at my local library which has free WiFi.

Vista SP1

by Seeress - 3/22/08 11:27 AM In reply to: My understanding is same as yours... by glenn30

It blew up my 3 week old machine. Stopped running at Stage 2 49%. Nothing I could do would reboot my machine.. a HP Pavilion Desaktop PC 2 64 bit AMD processors, 3 gig up front Ram etc. None of that power made NO difference in making Vsta work. It is on its way back to the factory to be a brand new but refurbished machine now. I wish I had never gone for the UP grade . My Older XP is now hooked up and will stay that way even when I get back the Vista until Uncle Bill decides to fix this new OS thatt wont run your older programs..bcause it cannot even run itself.

Not sure if it will ever be time, p.s.

"A few of my old programs just won't run on Vista and Earthlink, my ISP, doesn't run well"

I am running Vista Home Premium with SP1 and UAC off.

I keep working at running old programs and finally got the last one to work. I right-click on the install .exe file and choose "run as administrator" and it installs. Running the program creates a notice that a .dll file is needed. That is pretty nice but the autofind feature can't find it on the internet. I found it, copied it to the Windows/System32 folder and the program works...but without a lot of searching and reading, how would anyone know to right-click and install as administrator?
