Wise Words Mother Goose

by gerardwhite - 10/12/07 9:30 AM In reply to: critique with hope by techgoose

Clear, concise, informative and exactly right. If Grooveshark don't offer you a job, I will!

I posted my questions on their website forum, they disappeared pretty quickly, can't imagine why, but they are now appearing on a few forums and I guess they will spread until answered.

Maybe I am missing something here, does this kid Tarantino seriously think he is going to take on the industry, make em an offer they can't refuse, put a horses head in our bed, and come out on top of the world? Am I watching the wrong movies? Is this the one where the heist goes wrong and they suspect one of them is an informant? (I'd watch the guy with the Sicilian name from Harry Fox, he's got form:-)

As you rightly point out, many people are looking for the solution. However, everyone discounts scamming users with clever legal documents. Groovesharks EULA is not easy to find on their site, it takes a knowledge of the law to understand and only when you get to page 10 do you realise that they expect users to indemnify Grooveshark! I started out thinking they were naive, but I am rapidly coming to the conclusion they are actually devious and know precisely what they are doing.

I'm still not convinced this is not MiiVii 2. If not, the RIAA must think the heavens have opened and it's raining gold because all they need to do is get a Grooveshark membership and buy a song from each user, $122,000 x 5,000 users = $610,000,000 and growing at a rate of $10,000,000 a day! No wonder they refused to comment!!! And we are not talking maybe, the RIAA are on to a sure bet, Jammie Thomas at least could claim ignorance, with Grooveshark, there is no get out clause, users have accepted liability and payment! You can probably add at least another zero to those numbers.

I'd like to see Grooveshark succeed, it would help a lot of people who have been trying to crack the same nut, but I am coming to the conclusion this is going to be another college massacre. The majors can make more money out of suing them than cutting a deal with someone who's business model depends on stealing copyright and deceiving users. That's their job! lol

I started off thinking I could assist, but I've lost hope. Removing my post from their site was the last straw, I was trying to help them, now, I want to teach them. I know how to do what they are trying to do without breaking the law, it's something I've been thinking about since Napster, (along with a zillion others). The one thing Grooveshark seem to have got about half right is the timing.

Techgoose, sound like a reasonable and knowledgeable person, I think I'd enjoy an off line chat with you if you have time, maybe lay a few eggs.

Taking music offline...

by kcoppock - 10/12/07 9:41 AM In reply to: Wise Words Mother Goose by gerardwhite

I'm assuming from the way this system works, I'm not sharing anything as long as I'm not running the client, right? Is anyone aware of a way to close my account on the site?

While I disagree that this is another MiiVi (Seems more like a good idea that wasn't fully thought out), you and techgoose have come up with plenty of reasons for me not to attempt to use their service.

Also, I got an email from them last night, offering EVERY song for purchase for only $.29 each...huh?

taking music offline - - he is what i would do

by techgoose - 10/12/07 10:05 AM In reply to: Taking music offline... by kcoppock

I am not certain of the details of their design, but here is what I would do: I would open the client app and delete the sharing folder (and/ or purge the folders you have designated for sharing of any copyrighted content for which you yourself do not own the rights); then I would close the client app. I cannot imagine it would be live after being closed. It is not clear what they mean when they "cache" content - - I shared some of my own music (that is, music I created) and saw that they appeared to upload it. Not sure what that is about. It was buggy in any case, misreading some of the metadata that was was ID3 v2 format. In any case, try closing all network apps and monitor your router or modem I/O - - there should nothing other than pings going on. I think that an early exit from sharing content you do not own will protect you from any potential consequences. It seems to me that those folks who are sharing thousands of files are simply putting a giant spotlight on themselves.

Actually...

I already uninstalled Sharkbyte. I noticed the caching thing as well, and wasn't sure what that was about. Fortunately no one has purchased any songs from my account, and now there shouldn't be any way for them to access it from my computer.

I guess I should have put more thought into this, something that seems too good to be true usually is. I love the idea of this though, if this ever does get to a legal point, I'd love to continue doing it, it's a great idea, but right now it's just not a good idea.

I'm also interested that there haven't been any further replies to the last few extremely good questions raised by both you and gerard, they were pretty quick to respond to the first few. I'll give the benefit of a doubt that they're just busy, but yeah...

Note: Due to the depth of this discussion thread, no additional replies can be accepted for this post. If you have comments to make, please reply to the original post at the beginning of this thread.
