Desktop icons keep rearranging themselves.

by wcampb50 - 10/14/08 7:38 AM

I am running Windows XP 5.1, service pac 3. There are currently quite a few icons on my desktop and I have them arrange according to my liking. When I left click the desktop and look under 'arrange icons by', the only item checked is 'show desktop icons'. Every now and then when I boot up my computer, the icons rearrange themselves. This does not happen on a consistent basis, and I do not ask to have the icons rearranged. What is causing this?

But Windows has never been able to keep icons in place. This is why you find addons to do this for you.

Lock them

Right Click on your desktop, select "Arrange Icons by" then ensure that "Lock Web Items on Desktop" is checked. Provided I keep that checked my icons remain in tact.

Did you download or update a program?

Sometimes if you download a new program, the desktop icon for that program may not appear on your desktop until you boot your PC again. And when it does appear after you reboot, it can cause all the other icons to rearrange themselves to accomodate the new icon. I've seen this happen myself with my PC. Even if you update an existing program and then restart the PC so that the update can go into effect, that can also cause the desktop icons to rearrange themselves.

Run your security scans

Changing setting is a symptom of security problems. Has your PC become sluggish/slow as well? After running your scans if this is an annoyance then live with it. {u}Make sure your doing back ups on a regular basis.{/u} Are you having other problems as well? List them.
